Identify Warning Signs
of an Abusive Relationship
Below are just some of the warning signs to help teenagers and their parents identify a potentially abusive relationship. If you think that you, or somebody that you know may be in an abusive relationship get help immediately. Todays' teenagers are injured and murdered through abusive relationships and it can happen to anybody. My daughter Jennifer was murdered at the age of 18 and I don't want it to happen to your teen - that is why I created this non-profit organization.
- History of legal or discipline problems.
- Blames you for his/her anger.
- Serious drug or alcohol use.
- History of violent behavior.
- Threatens others regularly.
- Insults you or calls you names.
- Trouble controlling feelings like anger.
- Tells you what to wear, what to do or how to act.
- Threatens or intimidates you in order to get their way.
- Prevents you from spending time with your friends or family.
Could you be in an abusive relationship?
Create a Safety Plan!
- Talk to someone that you can trust.
- Plan in advance to have a safe place to go.
- Keep money and your cell phone or calling card with you at all times.
- Memorize important numbers in case your phone is taken.
- Establish a code word or sign so that family, friends and co-workers know when to call for help.
Get Help
If you are in immediate danger, call 911. If you aren't in immediate danger and need somebody to talk to, you can call the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline 24 hours a day. You can also visit their website to talk with Peer Advocates during the hours of 4pm - midnight (CST).
